High Street retail experts will tell you that the key to success is “location, location, location” and so it is that the key to online success is “content, content, content”. The fact is that without content, you have nothing.

Whether it’s a one liner for a micro blog, 500 words for an article, 250 words for a blog, website copy, or landing page sales copy, you  must have content to succeed, and not just any content, but strong, clear, and interesting content that captivates your audience.

Many business owners find it hard to come up with fresh, newsworthy content for their online marketing efforts, but in fact many have loads of content already – but they will need to rewrite or edit from a new viewpoint or to make it more timely.

Here are five simple ways that you can generate plenty of online content – whatever your business type or location.

1 – Identify Content Needs or Gaps

Start off by considering the type of content that you need. Decide your marketing goals for the next year. For example, do you plan to conduct presentations or webinars, create a newsletter? Maybe you would like to develop eBooks and videos to promote your business and achieve expert status. So, make a list of all the different types of content you’ll need, in addition to why you need them.

2 – Hire a Writer

This isn’t compulsory but don’t knock it out without considering it fully. There will be a cost but it could be less than you might think. Apart from helping you with the next three points you can brainstorm the point above with a writer and when you have developed your plan for the year the writer will be able to take the pressure off of you by writing content on a regular and consistent basis so you can focus on your base business.

It is possible to find very good writers at a reasonable cost on sites such as Elance.com and Guru.com. You can also search the internet or look on Craigslist. But remember, you get what you pay for, so look for a strong English speaking writer who is great at research and has some good examples of content they have written for you to consider – preferably online.

3 – Review Your Existing Content

Have a look at all of the content you currently have in place. Pull together your blogs, articles, presentations, videos, newsletters, email campaigns, web copy, and press releases, and look for opportunities to rewrite or repurpose the content. For example, do you have a video you can turn into a blog or article? Or maybe a newsletter item or two that can be turned into a presentation or video? And what blogs or articles do you have where the content could be turned into a mini presentation or video? The list could go on and on.

4 – Collect Together all of Your Offline Content

When repurposing content, you don’t forget about your offline, hard-copy content, as well. Do you have printed newsletters, circulars, promotional fliers, or articles, for example? You can take a lot of this content and create online copy from it.

5 – Create a Topic and Content Database

It is important that you keep your content organised and the simplest way to do this is by creating a simple Excel spreadsheet that includes your forthcoming writing needs, details of any current content you plan on rewriting or repurposing and how. Also include a date (day, week, and month) that you intend to post any ‘new’ content from the source you’re repurposing.

If you follow these points you will be surprised how easy it becomes to identify and post lots of new and interesting content on a regular basis even without hiring a writer to develop totally new content from scratch. Give it a go!
