The British Business Angels Association

The British Business Angels Association (“BBAA”) is a trade association representing UK business angel networks, associates and affiliates.

Business Angels invest in business startup companies. These are the same sorts of business that venture capitalists invest in but Angels invest their own money, unlike venture capitalists, who manage the pooled money of others in a professionally-managed fund.

However whilst the investment is made on the judgment of an individual, the actual entity that provides the funding may be a trust, limited liability company, investment fund, etc. The panel on Dragon’s Den are more Business Angels than Venture Capitalists.

These guys are looking for a very high return on capital and typically look to get back 10 times their investment within 5 years. They don’t always achieve that because a high proportion of startup companies will fail but evidence shows that Angel backed startups are more likley to survive.

The British Business Angels Association is sponsored by major financial institutions and by the government. It provides advice to investors and to those seeking investors.
